Photographing children is probably my favorite niche in photography. Apart from being simply adorable, children are special because they see the world in such a magical way. I'm so glad I had a dad who was an avid photographer as well, because I have pictures to remember my childhood. I really do think it is important to capture these precious few years.
Aubrey was fantastic to work with! Fun, energetic, and full of great ideas! At the end of the shoot, she said to me, "You know, I think you're the first grown up I've had this much fun talking to." It was a simple, and honest statement, but it really made me feel like I was doing something worthwhile :) It was also a treat when Aubrey found a sign in front of our location, and we found out where we were shooting was actually named for her great great uncle!

Raven's Wings
By Sara Davis Wake girl from this darkened slumber Leave the world behind asunder These wings I give are meant for soaring Leave your doubts, go now exploring Fear not the day as you have the night Let your wings carry you secure in flight Now take of your mask and listen to me Finding your cause will set you free Sara Davis, Photographer Sydney Olson,Model Abi Warner, MUA Angie Van Dyke Olson Model Manager Feather cowl and mask, The Feather Guy Dress Jenny's Alterations, Anchorage Alaska I have to say there aren't many more beautiful things than a spring Sunday morning with all of the little flowers blooming and the birds singing. And lovely Bradie! What an amazing little lady, with gorgeous brown eyes and an infectious smile. I had such a fun time taking her portraits! Working with children and youth is such a passion for me, and its such an important part of life to remember. We forget the beauty and innocence of childhood as we grow older, so for the little bit of time I have with these wonderful young people, I am always brought back to my own childhood. I hope Bradie will be able to look back on these photos and remember these special times. Thank you Tarah and Ravi for sharing your amazing daughter with me! There's a trick to photographing children :) You have to trick them! It's not uncommon for little ones to be uncomfortable in front of the camera, and to tell you no when you ask them to pose. I've run into this problem several times! But as a mom of two, I know there are certain things little ones can't resist. They love flowers, and smelling flowers, and picking their mommies flowers. They absolutely love seeing pictures of themselves. And they love answering questions about what they are doing. For little Mel, holding still for pictures was very difficult, and she didn't want anything to do with me. Fortunately we were in a garden, so I asked her to smell the flowers. Then I asked her to find me her favorite one and point it out. When she was looking, I asked what she was doing, and I got her to perk up and smile at me. Then of course she ran away, so I chased her and it became a game. But she would happily stop to see a picture of herself on the back of my camera. Always make sure mom or dad is nearby, but make the session fun for the child! Candid, playful shots can be the most precious, and they show the child's personality. You may be hoping for something posed and planned, but often times children have other ideas. But very picture has potential to be amazing, and every portrait holds a memory. Sweet babies Aramis and Leah decided to have a picnic in the bluebells :) Along with getting to pick little flowers, they saw a giant raccoon and were caught completely off guard when a little grey rain cloud decided to pour! But five minutes later the sun came back out and they got to see a beautiful rainbow! Happy Spring! And sometimes you just don't want to have your picture taken :) I don't do this very often, but I wanted to share a little peek into my editing world :) Every image has potential, and as an artist, it is my job to realize that potential. This is part of the reason I do not present unedited photos to my clients, because I want them to see the vision in my mind brought to life. I look at raw unedited images as tools, like a painter looks at paint, for creating my art. For the first image, I had to remove Leah and completely build that right side of the tree as well as fill in the grass and flowers. For the second image, I removed Aramis and recreated the trees behind where he was and added a butterfly for Leah to look at. All rights reserved Arastan Photography 2016. Beyond the Veil By Sara Davis Girl, you were given a veil when you entered this world And were told to wear it always It became a comfort and shield Changing your view as you looked out from it But do not be afraid to lift it away It doesn’t protect you It protects your eyes from seeing clearly You are strong without it And will grow fiercer free from it Do not be afraid to take your first steps alone It is how we all enter this world And how we will all leave it Credits: Sara Davis, Photographer Arastan Photography Sydney Olson, Model, Universal Model Group Abi Warner, Markup Artist Angie Van Dyke Olson, Model Manager Skirt and Veil, Odd Duck Sewing by Kathryn Huang Dress, FE Fashion Shoes, Shoe Republic LA All rights reserved Arastan Photography 2016.
